María Gutiérrez-Vera is a Ph.D. Candidate in History at the University of Southern California. As part of The First 100: Chicanas Changing History team, she is currently transcribing oral histories, analyzing archival records, and doing her part to ensure that the contributions of past Chicana historians are recognized and accessible. She is incredibly excited to learn more from the women who made her own scholarly ambitions possible.
Gutiérrez-Vera’s doctoral research examines race, political representation, and Latino power in East Los Angeles. Her work focuses on the transformation of Chicano politics from the protest movements of the late twentieth century to formal electoral incorporation, with a particular emphasis on race, gender, citizenship, and local politics.
